Our Story

Mike Dunkle was a remarkable human. After graduating from Enumclaw High School in 1980 and the University of Puget Sound in 1989, Mike played a pivotal role at VALVe Software and was crucial to the development of STEAM. Mike quite literally transformed the way that video games are distributed and monetized, shaping the ecosystem of the modern gaming industry.

Mike’s path to his career in software was hardly traditional: he milked dairy cows; he drove long-haul semis; he groomed ski runs. But, along his journey, his relentless work ethic was met with a handful of nurturing opportunities that unlocked new levels of his potential: from a supportive boss in high school, to a tutoring relationship in community college, to an internship at the University of Puget Sound. Mike’s life was an example of how a series of seemingly insignificant interventions available in healthy communities can change the trajectory of someone’s life.

After Mike died of cancer in 2018, we launched the Provision Family Fund. Our goal is to support community organizations that make it possible for people like Mike to reach their full potential. Since our inception, we’ve proudly granted more than $1 Million to organizations across the Pacific Northwest.

Our Partners

The Provision Family Fund partners with organizations to build thriving communities across the Pacific Northwest. Our grants are location based, to organizations in one of our four focus areas, with annual revenues up to $8 Million. Gifts are multi-year; the goal is to equip an organization for what they deem is most impactful for their programming, be it supplementing operating funds, taking on a new employee, or launching a new program.

We take a trust-based approach: we research areas for impact, identify prospective partners, and invite organizations to apply. We choose one focus area per year. Unsolicited grant requests are not reviewed.
